Using Bitronix to Manage Transactions

Mule Runtime Engine versions 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 reached End of Life on or before January 25, 2020. For more information, contact your Customer Success Manager to determine how you can migrate to the latest Mule version.

Enterprise

Prior to version 3.5.0, Mule used the JBoss transaction manager to configure XA transactions. As of version 3.5.0, Bitronix is the recommended transaction manager for Mule Enterprise, since it provides out-of-the-box support XA transactions recovery.

If the Mule server crashes or loses connectivity to a resource manager (such as a JMS broker, database, etc.), this can cause a transaction to fail abnormally between the prepare phase and the commit phase of the two-phase commit protocol (2PC). In this case, the transaction manager needs to run a recovery process to complete any in-flight transaction that was taking place during the failure. While this kind of failure is unlikely, a mechanism is needed to retain data consistency in the event of this happening.

Bitronix allows Mule to automatically recover interrupted transactions on restart. JBoss on the other hand requires that you implement this process by hand, which is extremely difficult and time-consuming.

Prerequisites

This document assumes you are familiar with working with Shared Resources in Mule.

Using Bitronix in Mule

Using Bitronix in a Single Application

To configure an application to use Bitronix, declare the transaction manager outside of your flows, as shown below.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<mule xmlns="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xmlns:spring="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans"
      xmlns:bti="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti"
      xsi:schemaLocation="
       http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans-current.xsd
       http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core/current/mule.xsd
       http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti/current/mule-bti-ee.xsd">
    <bti:transaction-manager/>
...
</mule>

Using Bitronix in All Applications in a Mule Domain

To use Bitronix in all applications associated to a Mule domain, define Bitronix as the transaction manager in your mule-domain-config.xml, as shown below. Doing so causes all applications associated to the domain to use Bitronix, without needing to declare the transaction manager in individual applications. For further details on domain configuration, see Shared Resources.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<mule-domain xmlns="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/domain"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xmlns:jms="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms"
      xmlns:bti="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti"
      xmlns:spring="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans"
      xsi:schemaLocation="
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti/current/mule-bti-ee.xsd
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/domain http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/domain/current/mule-domain-ee.xsd
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms/current/mule-jms.xsd">

    <bti:transaction-manager/>

</mule-domain>

Configuring the Bitronix Transaction Manager

In the Mule container, there is only one instance of the Bitronix Transaction Manager; all the applications that have Bitronix defined as their transaction manager use this instance. Thus, the Bitronix Transaction Manager cannot be configured at the application level, only at the domain level.

The default configuration values for Bitronix are suitable for most use cases. However, if you wish to customize the transaction manager, you can do so by using system properties or the wrapper.conf file located in the $MULE_HOME/conf directory.

The table below lists configuration attributes for Bitronix.

Configuration Attribute Description Default value

mule.bitronix.transactiontimeout

Timeout for XA transactions, in seconds

60

mule.bitronix.recoveryinterval

Recovery execution interval for XA transactions, in seconds

60

mule.bitronix.serverId

Unique ID for the transaction manager to register in the XA transaction logs. This value must be unique for each Mule server

Combination of the host IP and, if running in HA, the cluster node ID

Bitronix and JMS

Bitronix integration provides a JMS caching connection factory, which you must use whenever you want to implement resource pooling in JMS. The example mule-domain-config.xml file below demonstrates how to declare a Bitronix transaction manager in conjunction with a JMS connection factory.

*Notes:

  • Bitronix and JMS do not honor the caching connection factory and TCP connections are recreated regardless of how this factory is set.

  • In the following example, the specification="1.1" value is mandatory because Bitronix only supports version 1.1.

<mule-domain xmlns="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/domain"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xmlns:jms="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms"
      xmlns:bti="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti"
      xmlns:spring="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans"
      xsi:schemaLocation="
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti/current/mule-bti-ee.xsd
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core/current/mule.xsd
               http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/jms/current/mule-jms.xsd">

    <spring:bean name="xaConnectionFactory" class="org.apache.activemq.ActiveMQXAConnectionFactory">
        <spring:property name="brokerURL" value="vm://localhost?broker.persistent=false&broker.useJmx=false"/>
    </spring:bean>

    <jms:activemq-xa-connector connectionFactory-ref="connectionFactoryPool" name="sharedJmsConnector" maxRedelivery="-1" specification="1.1" numberOfConsumers="1"/>

    <bti:xa-caching-connection-factory name="connectionFactoryPool" minPoolSize="5" maxPoolSize="15" maxIdleTime="40" connectionFactory-ref="xaConnectionFactory"/>

    <bti:transaction-manager/>

</mule-domain>
Attribute Description

minPoolSize

The minimum number of JMS connections to hold in the pool.

maxPoolSize

The maximum number of JMS connections to hold in the pool.

maxIdleTime

The maximum time, in seconds, that an idle connection can remain in the pool before it is closed.

Bitronix and the Database Connector

Bitronix integration provides a datasource connection pool for the Database connector, which you must use whenever you want to implement resource pooling in the database connector.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<mule xmlns:db="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/db"
      xmlns="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core"
      xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
      xmlns:spring="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans"
      xmlns:bti="http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti"
      xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans http://www.springframework.org/schema/beans/spring-beans-current.xsd
       http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/core/current/mule.xsd
       http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/ee/bti/current/mule-bti-ee.xsd
       http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/db http://www.mulesoft.org/schema/mule/db/current/mule-db.xsd">

        <spring:property name="databaseName" value="dbName"/>
    </spring:bean>

    <db:generic-config name="DBDefaultPool" dataSource-ref="PostgresDataSource"/>

    <bti:xa-data-source-pool name="bitronixDataSource" minPoolSize="5" maxPoolSize="15" maxIdleTime="40" acquireIncrement="2" preparedStatementCacheSize="6" acquireTimeoutSeconds="50" dataSource-ref="PostgresDataSource"/>

</mule>
Attribute Description

minPoolSize

The minimum number of JDBC connections to hold in the pool.

maxPoolSize

The maximum number of JDBC connections to hold in the pool.

maxIdleTime

The maximum time, in seconds, that an idle connection can remain in the pool before it is closed.

acquireIncrement

Number of connections to acquire at a time, when the pool is exhausted.

preparedStatementCacheSize

Number of statements cached per pooled connection. Defaults to 0, meaning that statement caching is disabled.

acquireTimeoutSeconds

The time, in seconds, that a client calling getConnection() will wait for a connection to be checked in or acquired when the pool is exhausted. Zero means to wait indefinitely.

Transaction Recovery

Enabling transaction recovery requires no configuration on your part. When Mule restarts after a system crash, it connects to all of the resources involved in XA transactions and starts the transaction recovery process, leaving all systems in a consistent state.
