Configuring Reconnection Strategies
As of Mule 2.x, Reconnection Strategies were referred to as "Retry Policies," because the underlying classes provided a generic framework for retrying the same operation over and over again. However, this terminology generated significant confusion among users who expected messages to get re-delivered and message exchanges to be re-executed. To thwart further misunderstanding, we have, as of Mule 3.x, resumed use of the term "Reconnection Strategies." |
Reconnection Strategies specify how a connector behaves when its connection fails. You can control how Mule attempts to reconnect by specifying a number of criteria:

the type of exception
-
number and frequency of reconnection attempts

the notifications generated, and more
For example, if the connection for an FTP transport goes down, the associated polling receiver tries to connect every 1000 ms (or whatever interval has been specified). This consumes resources and generates increasingly large log files because, typically, a connection continues to fail until you stop the reconnection process manually. Additionally, this reconnection behavior leaves the system in an unstable state, because the connector is theoretically "connected," even though it’s failing repeatedly, which is to say, continuously.
With a reconnection strategy, you can better control the behavior of a failed connection, by configuring it, for example, to re-attempt the connection only once every 15 minutes, and to give up after 30 attempts. You can also send an automatic notification to your IT administrator whenever this reconnection strategy goes into effect. You can even define a strategy that attempts to reconnect only during business hours. Such a setting can prove useful if your server is frequently shut down for nightly maintenance.
For an FTP transport configured with synchronous inbound and outbound endpoints, but no reconnection strategy, all inbound messages fail if the outbound connection goes down, because the inbound endpoint continues to receive messages. By contrast, with a reconnection strategy in place, the system loses the first message that fails (since FTP is not transactional) but once the reconnection strategy goes into effect, no further messages are accepted by the inbound endpoint (and thus, none are lost) until the connection is re-established.

For both the Mule ESB Enterprise and Community Editions later than Mule 3.2, you don’t need to specify the mule-ee.xsd schema, since reconnection strategies are now built in.

This section describes the reconnection strategies you can configure by editing your Mule application’s XML configuration file.

Non-Blocking Reconnection
By default, a reconnection strategy will block Mule application message processing until it is able to connect/reconnect. When you enable non-blocking reconnection, the application does not need to wait for all endpoints to re-connect before it restarts. Furthermore, if a connection is lost, the reconnection takes place on a thread separate from the application thread. Note that such behavior may or may not be desirable, depending on your application needs.
Any reconnection strategy can be made non-blocking simply by setting the attribute blocking="false"
. For example:

In Mule 2.x, the attribute asynchronous was used for this purpose. The new attribute blocking is the inverse of asynchronous , so a Mule 2.x configuration which specified asynchronous="true" should be changed to blocking="false" for Mule 3.x.

Transactions
When transactions are properly configured, any message being routed by Mule at the moment a reconnection strategy goes into effect will not be dropped. Instead, the transaction is rolled back and only committed once the transport successfully reconnects via the reconnection strategy.
Reconnect Notifiers
A reconnect notifier is called for each reconnection attempt and is also configurable. You can create a custom reconnect notifier that implements the org.mule.api.retry.RetryNotifier interface.

Configuring Separate Connectors for Inbound and Outbound Endpoints
A connector reconnection strategy is used for both inbound and outbound connections. If you require different behaviors for inbound and outbound connections, you can achieve this by configuring a different connectors for each strategy, then reference one connector each from the inbound and outbound endpoint, respectively.
Default Reconnection Strategy
The default reconnection strategy is used for any connector that does not have reconnection explicitly configured. You can set the default strategy using the <configuration>
element:

Creating a Custom Reconnection Strategy
To create a custom reconnection strategy, implement the interface RetryPolicy, where the method PolicyStatus applyPolicy(Throwable cause)
takes some action based on the type of exception, then returns PolicyStatus to indicate whether the policy has been exhausted or should continue to retry. You also create a RetryPolicyTemplate, which is what you actually configure on the connector. Typically, the template inherits from AbstractPolicyTemplate, and the method RetryPolicy createRetryInstance()
returns an instance of your custom RetryPolicy
. At runtime, a new instance of the RetryPolicy
is created each time the policy goes into effect, thereby resetting any state information it may contain, such as counters. For example:

Configuring Reconnection Strategies with the Spring Schema
Because the reconnection elements are only available in the Mule Enterprise Edition schema, Mule Community users must use standard Spring syntax for configuring a custom reconnection strategy. For example:

Configuring Reconnection Strategies Using Studio
Mule Enterprise Edition features Studio, a graphical, drag-and-drop editing environment for creating, configuring, debugging, and deploying Mule applications. Application-building and configuration previously accomplished by writing XML code can now be performed with Studio’s powerful drag-and-drop editor or through Studio’s graphical property panes, which feature drop-down menus and other conveniences. Alternatively, Studio provides an enhanced XML editor that features auto-completion. What’s best, you can switch between these two editors, and any changes you made in one automatically appear in the other.
Within the Studio environment, you typically set reconnection strategies for your application through global connectors. In rare cases where you want to set different reconnection strategies for the inbound and outbound endpoints in your flow, MuleSoft recommends that you configure two separate global connectors, then associate one with the inbound endpoint and the other with the outbound endpoint.
Best Practice
In addition to setting reconnection strategies on most connectors (Ajax, File, and VM are notable exceptions), you have the option to set them on global endpoints. (Once again, Ajax represents a major exception, which means that you can’t set a reconnection strategy on Ajax). However, MuleSoft recommends that whenever possible, you set your reconnection strategies on global connectors, rather than global endpoints, because this Best Practice generally allows you to reuse a once-written reconnection strategy again and again across all your flows and Mule projects. The only situation in which MuleSoft recommends configuring a reconnection strategy on a global endpoint(rather than a global connector) involves Jetty, whose connector doesn’t support reconnection. This is why MuleSoft recommends the Jetty global endpoint instead. |
About the Reconnection Strategy Tab
The Properties pane for almost every global endpoint and global connector that appears in the Studio interface features a Reconnection tab, as pictured below:
To display the Reconnection tab associated with the specific global connector or global endpoint you want to configure, complete the following steps:

launch the Studio interface

open the project for which you wish to set a reconnection strategy

click the Global Elements tab beneath the Message Flow canvas
-
select the global connector or global endpoint on which you wish to set the reconnection strategy, then double-click on it to open its Properties pane

if the global connector or global endpoint does not exist, click Create on the right side on the Global Mule Configuration Elements pane, then navigate through the Choose Global Type pop up, select the global element you want to create, then click OK to open its Properties pane. -
Click the Reconnection tab to display it.
By default, the "Do not use reconnection strategy" button is selected; in other words, the connector will not attempt to reconnect unless you tell it to. If you select one of the other radio buttons, then decide you don’t want a reconnection strategy after all, reset to the default simply by clicking "Do not use reconnection strategy."
For convenience you can select the Standard Reconnection radio button, which attempts to reconnect every 2000 ms, until a total of two reconnection attempts have been attempted.
Once you have selected Standard Reconnection, you can change the defaults for Frequency and Reconnection Attempts, and you can check the Reconnect Forever option so that the connector or endpoint will keep trying to connect until it succeeds. Be warned, however, that large (or infinite) numbers of closely spaced reconnection attempts can consume significant resources and generate extremely long log files.
You can prevent the reconnection attempts from completely blocking the main application flow thread by checking the option near the bottom of the Reconnection tab labeled Run the reconnection as a separate thread.
Custom Reconnection allows advanced users to implement reconnection strategies they have custom coded in the form of java classes. After you select the radio button to activate this option, begin to type the name of your custom java class within the text field labeled Class. After you have typed enough letters to identify the class uniquely, press enter to accept the entry. After the Class Browser displays, click OK again to commit your choice.
In the Properties panel on the Reconnection tab, click the "plus" icon to select and set one of the properties exposed by your custom reconnection strategy. Repeat this for all the properties you wish to configure for this particular instance of the reconnection strategy. If, subsequently, you want to edit the value you have assigned to a property, click on the property, then click on the pencil icon to open the property for editing.
When you are satisfied with the type of reconnection you have selected as well as the values you have specified for the configurable properties, click OK at the bottom of the Reconnection tab.
